We’re still in Lititz and making the best of our time here. In addition to being able to spend time with Carolyn Hoy and her boys Devin and Adam, we’ve gotten to know a lot of our community. This past weekend we checked out the Lititz Crafts Show and were able to hand out some flyers. There is also a story on us in today’s local paper, the Intelligencer Journal.
We’ve also been put in contact with Andrew Buckwalter who runs Buckhill Farms, an organic, CSA farm.
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture and it’s a government program that allows the farmer to focus on growing the best crops he or she can. The way it works is members in the community will put up the capital for the entire season before crops are grown and become shareholders in the farm and its harvest. The farmer then doesn’t have to worry about the costs of growing, shipping food or marketing to potential customers. The customers receive the freshest and healthiest crops twice a week, the day they are picked!
Andrew invited us to work on the farm today and tomorrow to help with the harvest in exchange for some funds to repair the bus and teach us about agriculture. He also sent us home today with two delicious melons.
