We began this trip and decided that it would be a good opportunity to see how efficient a trip we could take. It was to be a shorter trip with a smaller crew than we are accustomed to, so we had to make full use of every crew member and resource we had. Claims of a zero budget trip were made early on, but we found it to be quite difficult.
Six days, $310.02 and 2850 miles later, we were in Palm Harbor, FL (Tampa Bay, FL). Of the 2850 miles, more than 2,500 were fueled by 100% used vegetable oil.
Of the $310 spent, half went to diesel fuel while the other half went to bus maintenance (fuel & oil filters, motor oil, ATF, light bulbs and bus wash). For the entire six day trip, less than $20 was spent for 4 people and a dog! This is thanks in large part to freegan experts Justin and Jessica. Justin and Jessica were able to bring boxes of fresh fruit from the farm they were working at in Southern California in addition to having a ton of food donated by grocery stores. As if that were not enough, Terry from Green Fuel Lab went all out by giving us 10-20 pounds of top grade mozzarella cheese (seriously, he is also a cheese salesman).
Speaking of Green Fuel Lab, we have results for their hydrogen converter that we were testing. Our average mileage without the hydrogen converter has been between 7-8 mpg. With the patent pending device installed and running, we were able to achieve a new top speed (80 mph) and an unprecedented 10-11 mpg. That is a minimum of 20% increase in fuel economy coming from a smaller prototype than the guys plan on manufacturing. The device required minimal maintenance (we are told the final version will require none!) and it pulled less power than we could even notice from the battery! We have already sent the device back and eagerly await a new one. Thanks Green Fuel Lab!

Affordable travel you say? How about improved fuel economy too?
